We have kayaks, canoes and a rental pontoon at our own dock, and the ATV and snowmobile trails start at the edge of the property. The first mile of U.S. Route 1 is twenty-four minutes up the road, in Fort Kent.

Eagle Lake holds landlocked Atlantic salmon, lake trout, brook trout, cusk and yellow perch. You can boat from here into the rest of the Fish River Chain, and fuel is right next door at the Old Mill Marina.
Summer is peak season, and September is the month people come back for.
People swim off the beach, take the pontoon out on the chain, and the kids stay on the dock until someone calls them in. Peak weeks run Saturday to Saturday with a seven-night minimum, which suits a family week.

Fall brings warm days, cold nights, no bugs and a quiet lake. The leaves turn in northern Maine before the rest of the state. Peak color comes in the last week of September and lasts into the first week of October. Fishing is good, the water is still swimmable if you're brave, and there's no seven-night minimum.

Snowmobile and ATV trails run right off the property, and the Eagle Lake 100-Mile Sled Dog Race brings people from both sides of the border. You can ice fish, rent a smelt shack, and come back to a fire. There's plenty of room to park a truck and trailer, and the lot is plowed all winter.

The quietest weeks of the year come after ice-out. The fishing picks up, the lupines come up along the roads, and you'll have the beach to yourself. Bring a jacket, and expect black flies by late May.

Eagle Lake is in the St. John Valley, a few miles south of Fort Kent and the Canadian border. Groceries are three minutes away. Everything else is a drive.

Route 1 runs 2,369 miles from Fort Kent to Key West, Florida, and mile one is a short drive from your cabin. It's the usual photo stop up here. Line the whole group up in front of the granite "America's First Mile" monument.
Granite monuments and a small plaza on the St. John River mark the start of the road, with the U.S., Canadian, Maine and Acadian flags flying and the international bridge to Clair, New Brunswick, right behind it. The 1840 Dube House marks where that first mile ends.
Route 1 was designated on November 11, 1926, so it turns 100 this fall, which makes this a good year to visit.
